Three Against the Odds
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
"In each cycle of crisis, three heroes shall arise from our people to meet the challenge...always there are three." --- The Wizened One
Yet another magic-wielding jerk from another dimension has spoiled an otherwise reasonable existence and banished Frogkind, forcing them to roam the world of Primeva, hunted.
You grew up in this crucible and are now ready to lead your people to conquer your old nemesis.
Travel the world in this non-traditional roguelike, building up your heroes and settlement as you face wave after wave of enemies until you are ready to return to your homeland and forcibly evict the evil one for good and all.
Good Overview by @Tran Plays:
A video was done by TranPlays that does a good job of giving a preliminary overview of the game.
Roguelike or Roguelite?
- Death of a hero is not the end. Inspired by the death and deeds of past heroes, two more heroes will rise to follow the first
- If your settlement is destroyed, the game ends
- Three separate missions with varying difficulty due to starting conditions
- The first mission has three variations
- Knowledge of magical pattern combos carry over after failed runs
Build Your Character and Your Species
- Remain a typical frog or evolve into 3 additional amphibious species with differing strengths and weaknesses
- Choose skills from 3 schools or become a knave and choose one skill from each school
- 23 Separate Powers
- Buy, find or craft over 100 unique items
- Boost your character with the power of gemstones or cash them in for money or magical powers
- Uncover the secrets of the world of Primeva and learn what seeks to destroy it
Defend and Build Your Settlement
- Protect your settlement with towers, walls and allied forces
- Light resource management -- stock up on food before you journey to harsh climates or face the winter
- Manage workers who gather food, stone, gold and wood
- Hire additional workers and mercenaries
- Manage the production of weapons and potions and keep your trade route in tact
Monsters and Mayhem
- Fight hundreds of different types of monsters spawned by the bordering terrain
- Risk/Reward--Decide whether to anger additional enemies by attacking Crypts, Snake-Pits, Dungeons or Thieves Dens
- Face the dreaded behemoths who ignore you and attack your settlement instead
- Learn the lore of distinct tribes of enemies who inhabit different parts of Primeva
- From the usual fare to the bizarre - fight shadow spiders, the undead, minotaurs, dragons as well as chicken-dragons and disgruntled squirrels
- Try to avoid the many other perils of the world from fire, lava, clouds of hot steam and poison to hallucination inducing gases and parasites
Take a Break and Do Some Fishing
- Gather or purchase bait and lures and cast a line
- Catch panfish, trophy fish or discover allies or monsters below the waves
- Come on, you have time to pull that bass out of the water before the Ethereal Eel bites your head off!
Demo
The demo contains the first full mission however you will eventually meet the evil and very greedy Demo Devil who will devour your settlement long before you can complete the mission.
Your saved games for the demo should be visible when you run the full game.
Solo Dev
This is a full game and can be played through from start to finish. While a significant amount of testing has been undertaken, there is no test-team and this game is essentially a one-person effort. It is not known with precision how stable or balanced the game is. You can help by enabling the "Allow Sending Crash Dumps to Developer" option within the game which is disabled by default. Only the crash dump and the outside IP sending the data is sent.
I have also set up a repository to track player feedback at https://github.com/Flippworks/3AO_Defects_Enhancements/wiki should you wish to note a bug or make a suggestion.
Game Requirements
The game is best played on 1920x1080.
At common lower resolutions you can choose if the game stretches to fit your resolution (with some distortion) or play in a window-like mode.
At uncommon lower resolutions the graphics may appear to be distorted.
The base game requires <500MB of hard drive space including saved games.

Hello!
I am enjoying the game demo a lot, but do you think you could add full keyboard support at some point?
Abilities are not assigned hotkeys by default, and I am not sure how to assing them, because CTRL + number over an ability does not work for me in the demo. If I click an ability, I cannot cancel it with ESC. Can't select a target for abilities using the keyboard, such as talking or exploring.
Thanks for the feedback, I will work towards better keyboard support.
The Hotkey Ctrl+Number assignment also required left click but after thinking about it, I realize that that is probably not necessary and was confusing so I removed the requirement.
Escape canceling any selected building/ability/card is also a standard thing, not sure why I didn't add it already
I just published a new version that includes the above.
Using the keyboard to select targets and then play building/ability/card on will be something I will have to think about the best way to implement a little bit more, but I will try to get there.
A full keyboard interface where you can play the entire game without using the mouse could be a possibility but I will have to also think more about the best way to do it. I think being able to play abilities/cards/buildings with the keyboard would come first.
Thank you! That's a massive quality of life change.
Will we get a steam copy or will we still receive updates?
I am still new to all this but I would like to investigate giving Steam keys to anyone who bought it here and also always pushing updates to both.
Thanks a lot sir :)
Steam keys available now.
Got my key and activated thank you so much sir
Got it im so excited!
This looks amazing surprised i never heard about it, wishlisted and currently trying to get money for it cheers
Hi, I’m liking it so far! Is there a way to change the resolution of the game or fullscreen it? I’m on the Linux version if that matters.
The F11 key should toggle fullscreen in Linux. Or at least, it does for me. If that is not working for you I would be interested to know the resolution and distro of Linux to investigate it further.
There is also an option to stretch the graphics to fit full screen. The settings button (gear icon) will take you there. That option won't appear in the settings if your monitor resolution is at 1920x1080
Yep, the F11 key works for fullscreen, thanks! My monitor’s resolution is 1920x1080 so I guess that’s why the other graphics option you mentioned wasn’t there.
